Oaks Parish is a parish church that seeking to exist at the intersection of the story of God, people, and place. Visually speaking, think about the church in Van Gogh's "Starry Night" but with the light on. Scholars note that the word "parish" originates from the latin word παροικία and means "sojourning in a foreign land". At it's root it carries the connotation of one dwelling beside a stranger in a familial way. For various reasons, including sociological, geographic, environmental and logistical factors, we hope to become a part of the warp and woof of communities south of Powell Blvd (hence SoPo!). This geographic area can be described as the 97206, 97202, 97267 and 97222 zip codes and is home to approximately 100,000 residents. This section of the city includes the communities of Brooklyn, Creston Kenilworth, Reed, Eastmoreland, Westmoreland, Sellwood, Woodstock, Foster-Powell, Brentwood-Darlington, and Milwaukie. It's been said that it takes a variety of churches to seek the welfare of various people. Living out of the grace of Christ, it's our hope that it would go well with the peoples and places of this parish. (credits)
